The Position
The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill two (2) regular, full-time positions in the class of Deputy Sheriff at the Yolo County Sheriffs Office. This assignment will be to patrol an assigned area and enforce State and local laws; to receive and serve civil processes and subpoenas; to supervise inmates in the jail facility; to perform duties as a courtroom bailiff; and to perform other related duties as required.

- $45.77 – $55.63/hr
- $7,933.47 – $9,642.53/mo

For Deputy Sheriff
In addition to the salary posted for this position, employees receive additional compensation, up to a total of 15% of base, by stacking a maximum of two of the following incentives:
- 2.5% for possession of Intermediate POST
- 7.5% for possession of Advanced POST
- 2.5% for possession of a 2 year degree
- 7.5% for possession of a 4 year degree
- 10% for possession of post graduate degree

“Classic” member CalPERS retirement formulas are:
Misc: 2.5% at 55
Safety: 3.0% at 55
Deputy Sheriff Safety: 3.0% at 50
“New” member CalPERS retirement formulas (for employees hired into a CalPERS agency for the first time after January 1, 2013) are:
Misc: 2% @ 62
Safety: 2.7% @ 57
The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbent in this classification; however, other duties may also be required:
- Patrols assigned area using patrol car and two-way radio unit;
- Answers calls for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of State and local laws;
- Observes assigned area for suspicious acts and unsafe conditions;
- Conducts preliminary investigations at scenes of accidents and crimes;
- Prepares detailed reports of all activities;
- Provides assistance to other Deputies and other law enforcement agencies as necessary;
- Receives and serves a variety of civil papers including summons and complaints, subpoenas, orders, writs of attachment, executions, and claim and delivery;
- Confers with appropriate parties in serving civil processes;
- Makes arrests in contempt proceeding;
- Effects evictions and seizes personal property ties;
- Serves as jailer;
- Serves as bailiff;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
Certificate: Possession of a valid POST Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.
In addition to the above, applicants must:
- Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment;
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law
- Successfully pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Department;
- Not have been convicted of a felony; and
- Be in good physical condition and pass a thorough medical and psychological examination prior to employment.
What is the minimum age to be a Deputy Sheriff?
- The Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requires that you be 21 years of age.
Is there an age limit for becoming a Deputy?
- You are eligible to be hired as long as you meet the minimum qualifications and pass the written test and the agility test.
What does the physical agility test consist of?
- Body drag – lift and drag a 165 pound dummy 32 feet
- Obstacle course- run a 99 yard obstacle course with several sharp turns, curb height obstacles and a 34 inch high obstacle that must be vaulted
- Chain link fence- run 5 yards to a 6 foot chain link fence, climb over the fence and continue running another 25 yards
- Solid fence climb- run 5 yards to a 6 foot solid fence, climb over fence and continue running another 25 yards
- 500 yard run
Do I have to have my POST Basic Certificate to apply to be a Deputy?
- No. If you are applying for a Deputy Recruit position, we will sponsor you through a POST Regular Basic Course academy. If you have already obtained your POST Basic Certificate you can apply for the Deputy Sheriff position.
How long is the POST Regular Basic Course academy?
- The POST Regular Basic Course Academy has a minimum requirement of 664 hours. However, most POST certified basic training academies exceed the 664 hour minimum; by 200 or more hours with some academies presenting over 1000 hours of training and testing. That translates to about 6 months of training in the intensive full-time academy format.
How long does the background investigation process take?
- You can expect the background process to take approximately 6 – 8 weeks but it can vary candidate to candidate.
Do I have to be a US Citizen to apply?
- No, you do not have to be a US Citizen to apply. However, you do have to be legally authorized to work in the United States under current federal law.
What should I wear to my interview?
- We recommend you dress in business casual attire.
